So much for the precept that “no one is above the law”

So often we hear public officials say that no one is above the law and yet the indictment of our former President seems to say otherwise.  On CBS news this morning, Senator Marco Rubio argued that the indictment will just further divide our country and that the former President’s willful actions that actually broke several of our country’s laws did not cause damage to the country; thus it should not have been cause for his indictment.  He stated that there should have been prosecutorial discretion used so as not to bring the matter to the courts.  Really?

As a life-long Republican I am struggling with this attitude.  Over the last few days, several of the leaders of the Republican party, including the powerful Speaker of the House, have come to the defense of the former President and said the Department of Justice was being politicized.  Honestly?  From my perspective the DOJ was just doing its job.  I find it unfortunate that the Republicans no longer have Liz Cheney to speak the truth and to bring common sense and integrity back to the Party.  The former President who has stated that following the rules is for losers, continues to flaunt his notoriety to get away with not telling the truth and not meeting his legal responsibilities of his business ventures.  All of this it appears just to feed his ego if nothing else.  What an incredible negative example he is setting for the American public and for the younger generation who some day will be running this country.

If we continue to let powerful people get away with breaking the law, how can we expect everyday Americans to obey them.  Without laws and law enforcement, we would have anarchy.  But today there seems to be millions of people in this country who actually could care less about it.  And in many ways I don’t blame them because it seems they have good reason.  Statements on social media  and even official news reports constantly point out that those who skirt the law and sell phony products more often than naught make out like bandits.  The rich get richer and the powerful get more powerful based on how good of a scam artist they’ve become.  A prime example of this is how our former President has managed to pull the wool over the eyes of so many millions of Americans for so many years.

Another related case is with the current President’s son, Hunter Biden, whose legal indiscretions would have likely been swept under the rug recently except for the bravery of a federal whistleblower who could no longer stay silent about the miscarriage in justice he was seeing.  The Biden case has also been deemed as another political witch hunt in order to get a rich son of a powerful family out of legal jeopardy.  In reality however, it is another valid criminal state of affairs that should be brought before the courts.  It remains to be seen if it ever will.

Sometimes I wonder if the concept of a “law abiding citizen” is headed for extinction.
