Public misconception of nuclear power crops up everywhere

It amazes me how many times I’ve observed instances of non-educated ramblings about nuclear power from members of the general public.  For example, this morning’s commentary by John Phipps on the U.S. Farm Report broadcast was in response to feedback from a listener who took issue with one of John’s prior messages on nuclear power.  The listener chastised John for his “comic” positive depiction of nuclear power.  I would say that John provided a gracious response . . . much moreso than I would have.  The anti-nuclear stance by the listener sounded like that obtained from the education he probably received by the presentations that have been dispensed from Hollywood and the News Media, both of whom over the decades have primarily projected an inflammatory and inaccurate account of nuclear energy.  It’s one of the reasons I wrote and published my book called “Happiness is a Cool Reactor.”  It was my attempt at trying to provide a factual account of the nuclear industry and serve as an educational tool to help people gain an objective view of the risks and benefits of the nuclear power industry. Like me, John Phipps served on a nuclear powered submarine back in the 1970s, but instead of making a career in the nuclear industry when he got out of the Navy, John went back to the agricultural industry.  Even so, he remained a stalwart supporter of nuclear power and his commentaries about the industry shown on U.S. Farm Report have always been on the positive side but fair, pointing out if there were problems that needed to be mentioned.  However, unlike Hollywood and the Media, he never blew the problems out of proportion.  John provides his thoughts on numerous subjects and I enjoy listening to his segment on the show each week.   In addition to appearing on U.S. Farm Report, John also publishes written remarks in several blogs which can be seen on the website www.blogger.com.  I wish there were others like John who could express the truth in a balanced fashion based on the facts like he does; without an axe to grind, without trying to gain attention, without trying to make a name for themselves and feed their ego.  In a world filled with fake news and illiterate influencers, John is a breath of fresh air.
